Asked 4/14/2016 – San Antonio, TX

I have a MAN DEL CS PG 1 >=4G<200G. I have a very good chance of getting probation and since the actual arrest have been doing very well, went to treatment for drug addiction, work a full time job and now going back to college. I very much want to be a attorney in Texas, or a paralegal. I do not have a conviction as of now, but Im not to sure that if I do get convicted if that will bar me from moving forward. If I have to do go to prison, would that as well stop me from pursuing…?

Answer

You may study either career path at any school that will accept you. There is no licensing board for paralegals, but the State Bar will make inquiry about your criminal record if and when you apply to take the Bar exam and obtain a law license. The examination of character is on a case by case basis, so you cannot know that you are definitely prohibited from getting a law license, but it will be difficult. You may contact the State Bar at https://www.texasbar.com/ for more detailed information.
