Asked 4/1/92016 – Woodville, TX

My nephew has been in jail for 11 months and has a court appointed attorney. He has only talked to his attorney once. His attorney told him he will not do anything to help him without 20 thousand dollars. He has not even been arraigned yet. But it is supposed to be coming up soon. What should I do.

Answer

A court appointed attorney CANNOT request payment from his/her client. Your nephew should write a letter to the Judge where his case is pending, inform the court what has happened and request a new attorney be appointed IMMEDIATELY.
