I co-signed on a check last week for a friend that claimed the check was legal but her brother didn’t have the proper ID. Now I’m concerned that it may have been some kind of bad check. I’m not even sure the amount the check was for because as soon as I walked into the check cashing store they were handing me the upside down check pointing where to sign…. I believe the amount was over 5000.00 though just from the conversation they were having with the cashier. I’m very concerned. What should I do right now?
Answer
If you presented the check to a financial institution and it was cashed, you are responsible if the check is returned. You will have thirty days from the date you receive notice about the check bouncing to make restitution; if you do not, criminal charges may be filed against you.
