Asked 5/4/2016 – Tyler, TX

My boyfriend is 20 and will be 21 in July in 15 and will be 16 in July. We want to get married. My grandmother is my legal guardian and she is willing to give consent.
Is it safe to get married? Is there any risk of him going to jail?

Answer

If your legal guardian consents to the marriage, it is perfectly legal. It is NOT legal for you to have any sexual contact until you are married; this could cause him to go to prison for up to 20 years. Go to the local justice of the peace, get a marriage license and schedule the ceremony.
