In June 25, 2006 I had an identity theft stolen from me. I had stolen from me everything but my driver’s linces! At the time there was an video from the gas station but the detective NEVER showed it to me at all. What do I do and how can I solve this problem? They have put an mortgage under my name and God knows what else have they put under my name. Also I have learned that they have applied for the food stamps and they have been approved for?

Answer

1) Contract the Department of Public Safety and inform them of the identity theft. An alert will be placed on your driver’s license number and you will be given instruction on what how to respond if you are detained by police and outstanding warrants are discovered in your name which are not really yours.
2) Contact all the credit reporting agencies and obtain copies of your credit report to determine what exactly is out there.
3) Contact a consumer law attorney in your area after getting your credit reports. Depending on the extent of the problem, a comprehensive game plan may need to be developed. Good luck.
