Asked 6/23/2016 – Houston, TX

On behalf of my fiancé, I’ll explain his situation. He had accumulated tickets over time and didn’t do anything about them, he was arrested in October and served 3 days’ time for the overdue tickets; however they later told him he still owed about $700-800. Now, he has a suspended license and 3 warrants & was stopped just yesterday by a cop who gave him this information but let him go with a ticket and a court date. What can we do?

Answer

If, when your fiancée was arrested, he entered a plea of guilty or no contest, final convictions were entered and credit for time spent in jail was applied to the fines but there was still a balance due, then your fiancée is out of luck. He entered a plea, waived his right to trial and convictions have been reported to the Department of Public Safety. If final convictions have NOT been entered, a local attorney may be able to help. Get with a local attorney on the new citation, in any event.
