Asked 7/14/2016 – Victoria, TX

My situation is that I have sole custody of my 17-year-old daughter, and I have given her permission to move out and live with her boyfriend’s family because they live in a better school district. She was living with her paternal aunt by choice in the same district last school year, but the arrangement did not work out. I want her to continue school in the same district. She will be 18 in January 2017, and I wanted to find out if she could register herself for her senior year. I do not live within the school district.

Answer

She cannot register herself. You would have to speak with the school district and determine what documentation they will accept for a 3rd party to act as guardian, determine her residence and enroll her in school
