Asked 8/4/2016 – Houston, TX

If you received a no insurance ticket in Texas but live in another state with an out of state license and paid the fine, do you still have to pay the $250 for the following three years? My home state has no such ridiculous fine tacked on to the fine that you originally paid. How does this work? Thanks in advance for your time.

Answer

Surcharges imposed for no insurance convictions are imposed by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The DPS does not have the authority to impose sanctions on driver’s licenses issued by other states. The conviction, however, will be reported to the appropriate agency of the state that issued the driver’s license in question. You will have to contact an attorney in that state to find out what effect that conviction will cause.
