Asked 8/6/2016 – Houston, TX

One morning during peak hour I was trying to merge to go into another highway and made what the officer classified as an UNSAFE CHANGE OF LANES AND IMPEDING THE SPEED LIMIT violations. There was only one lane that could merge (left lane) but I was on the right one trying to move one lane to the left, police officer argues that I changed lanes when white line was solid, which is untrue…there was a car in front of me as well doing the same thing which slowed the traffic down (They were pulled over too). The two violations are costing me close to $400, I need to find options to reduce the fine and have them erased from my driving record. My record was clean until this happened.
Should I take the Driving Safety Course? Should I risk going to my court date and fight it?

Answer

By law, you can only take the Driving Safety Course for one of the citations to avoid a conviction. There are several attorneys in the Houston area who should be able to help you. Check out the Harris County Municipal Justice Bar Association. Good luck.
