Asked 10/6/2016 – Houston, TX

I will be 18 in a month and I plan to move out. I’m enrolled in a private school funded by my parents and I planned to switch to public while I finish. My parents, who have to sign me out of the private school, say they will refuse to let me switch to public and call juvenile detention on me for “not finishing high school”. I like school and I want to finish but i AM moving out. (I’m moving into a house where I will be able to support myself) will they be able to report me even though they are the ones refusing to let me finish?

Answer

Your parents can file a report if they choose, but once you turn 18 your obligation is only to finish secondary school (high school). If you are properly enrolled you are emancipated at 18 and can live where you please
