Asked 7/15/17 – Houston, TX

My sons girlfriend just turned eighteen; however, when she was sixteen and seventeen, she was on probation for drugs. My minor daughter used her brother’s phone and heard an older message his gf left saying her PO did not do a drug test as she said she had her monthly, so she was going to tell her PO from now on she was on her monthly to get out of the tests, which apparently worked, and all she wanted to do was her drugs, and was going to continue. I’m not sure why he kept it on his phone, but a PO seemingly did not do their job and she is still doing drugs even after her probation ended. Sadly, if the PO did the drug tests, then they would have found out she was still doing drugs. Who can I turn this information into? Is there anything that we can do? It’s such a sad situation. She’s bringing our son down with her and we are at a loss ourselves as parents. We didn’t even know she was on probation until our daughter used our son’s phone and just being a “nosy” younger sister went through his messages. There are other things, too. Pictures etc. from this girl doing drugs. It’s really sad. She needs help.

Answer

If the probation for your son’s girlfriend has ended, the Court has lost jurisdiction over the matter, so there is no person to “turn someone in” to. In this situation, the legal system is not place where an addict can go for help. Unfortunately, until the addict really wants to receive help, there is not much any third party can do but pray. Good luck.
