Asked 3/28/2016 – Irving, TX

4 students, two 17 year olds, one 18 yr old and one 16 year old played ding-dong – ditch on another 17 year old, but it got out of hand when the guy who got out of the car kicked the door and his leg went through the glass and he pulled it out and they left. The mother of the house was inside and saw the event. Two weeks later the students were found out, the student and parents approached the owner of the house to apologize, pay for damages and ask for charges to be dropped. After much consideration the owners asked for a written apology letter explaining why they chose their specific house, the owners did say they will show the letter to the detective in charge of the case.

Answer

It will be up to the detective in charge of the case to determine whether criminal charges will be filed , letter or no letter. What is done with any such letter of apology is again, up to the detective. Any such letter can be used as evidence, or the detective can decide not to file the case once restitution is made and the letter is tendered.
