Asked 8/15/2016 – Victoria, TX

So I’m just wondering if the legal age is 17 or not. I’ve talked to multiple officers and I get a different response every time. So is it 17 or not. And can the police, sheriff, sheriff deputies or anyone do anything about it if I leave at 17 and my parents demand for me to come home. Thanks

Answer

You cannot move out until you are 18. If you run away, then yes, the police, sheriff’s deputies and anyone CAN do something about it. You would be subject to detainment, and anyone who lets you live with them is subject to criminal prosecution (see Texas Penal Code 25.06 – Harboring a Runaway Child))
