Hi All,

I got a ticket for speeding (19 above in the radar) last weekend at Lee County in Texas.

I came to Texas in January from Illinois. So it’s been 5 months. I have Illinois License and i couldn’t update since then because of tight schedule at my work. So officer gave me a warning for not updating the license and a violation for speeding. I have to appear in court in few days.

Please note: I might move to other state in next month or so because I am switching the job. So since I am moving in next month to different state, do I still need to get the license updated in Texas?

Answer

The law in Texas requires you to update your license 30 days after moving. Without a valid Texas license, certain plea bargain options are not available to you regarding your speeding citation. You are not asking a legal question, but one of practicality. You are aware of the law requiring you change your license, but you do not want to change your license if you will have to change it again in a few months. If you wish to be in compliance with the law, obtain a Texas license. If you don’t want the hassle, understand you are subject to further citation and accept the risks. You may want to talk with a local attorney about the speeding ticket.
