Asked 3/1/2016 – Houston, TX
Received several traffic citations in Texas in 2009 for failing to register Texas vehicle and failure to get a Texas driver’s license. Shortly after that, I moved out of the state and never returned. The Texas municipality located me in another state and issued a warrant for my arrest and asked that I pay fines of $900+. I have no money to pay.
Answer
The statute of limitations is tolled when the charging instrument (the complaints) is filed with the court. You can’t hide for a certain length of time, then have the case automatically dismissed. There may be other avenues to address this matter, or at least reduce the sums you might have to pay. Contact a local attorney in the county where you received the ticket to see what can be done.
