Asked 6/22/2016 – El Paso, TX

I’m 31 year old and got caught shoplifting at the PX. They took me at their office and they called the Military police and booked me. I’m ashamed for what I’ve done. I did a stupid thing for the love for my child. They fined me for $200. The military police said that I’m not going to court but then the AAFES said I’m going to have to go to court. I never been in trouble before except for this one that I made a wrong decision wanting good shoes for my child that I can’t afford it. I really regret what I’ve done but I know it’s too late. Please help me and tell me what to do. I really don’t want to have a record for the rest of my life. I can’t even afford to get a lawyer because my family is in debts. I’m scared to have a record because how am I going to apply for a job now. Please, please help me. What am I going to do?

Answer

Jurisdiction can be an issue with respect to criminal offenses on military bases. If your case is filed in the civilian courts, you must contact a local criminal defense attorney. Contact your local JAG officer if the case is filed in the military courts.
