I sent an anonymous tip to report my neighbors which I’m almost certain are dealing drugs. There are random people coming and going there at different times of the day and night. There are strange people that have hovered around my front door too. Since I put in this tip, I have a feeling the cops are going to ask for more info.
I also have a security camera outside my place that records everything including my neighbors house. While obviously it doesn’t catch the drug deals that go on inside it catches the individuals that go in/out as well as the people who wait outside and their strange behavior. I’m not sure how valuable the security camera footage is, but it catches a lot.
If the cops ask for the security camera footage, what is the best way to proceed legally? Can I get a benefit of some kind, such as money or good credit legally (if hypothetically I ever have criminal charges)?
Answer
The best way for you to proceed depends on the outcome you desire. If you want to help law enforcement in arresting people who are breaking the law, then give them the materials they request. You will not get rich nor do you get a get out of jail free card. You gave the police the tip for a reason. Follow through on it.
