Back in December 2015 I was caught trying to shoplift a bra from Walmart in Texas. I had just had my daughter and had no money because everything went towards making sure my baby has everything she needs. It was my first time and I was desperate and feel stupid because it’s not me. It was definitely my first and last time. They told me that I would have to pay a fine and wait for a letter saying I could come back. A civil demand came in the mall for $300 when the bra was only $16. I read other answers from other people’s questions and they said ignore it so I did. Today , April 2016 , a number called me saying if I don’t pay the fine I have to go to court. I really don’t have money to keep pay them my daughter is 5 months and everything I have goes towards her.

Answer

Paying the civil demand fee has no effect on any potential criminal prosecution. Ignore any calls or letters from the store or any private attorneys representing the store. If, however, you get a call or letter from any court or police department, contact a local attorney IMMEDIATELY.
