Asked 4/12/2016 – Dallas, TX

A detective came to my work and asked me to come in and talk to him. He would not tell me what it was in regards to all he said was I would not be arrested and would leave like I came in. I called him and asked him if we could talk over phone and he insisted that we talk in person but again would not tell me what it was about. I have no idea what it could be. Do I have to go talk to him or what should I do? I did see he had copy of my social and driver license in a file and I was fired and only told due to visitor I had meaning detective.

Answer

Go talk with a local attorney immediately and do NOT give a statement to law enforcement, Detectives and investigators are obtaining evidence to file criminal charges. There is a reason why Miranda warnings state: “Anything you say can and will be used against you”. I obviously have no idea what the police are talking to you about, and there might be enough evidence to file a case against you without your statement, but don’t dig your own grave. Call the detective, be polite and inform him you are going to speak with an attorney before making any statement, then get with counsel.
