Asked 8/31/2016 – McAllen, TX

I’m 17 and pregnant my mother wants to press charges on my 18 year old boyfriend, is there any way to prevent the charges? Can I get married at 17 and being pregnant? In Texas

Answer

You cannot prevent anyone from filing an incident report with the police; it is up to the detective assigned to the case to determine if criminal charges will be filed. In the situation you describe, I wouldn’t worry about it. You must be 18 in the State of Texas to marry without parental consent. Pregnancy will not prohibit a marriage.
