Asked 3/5/2016 – Hidalgo, TX
I got caught shoplifting a make-up product at Walmart. It was under $10, I was leaving and the security guard pulled me into a room and asked me to take everything out of my pockets. NO police were involved, he asked for my driver’s license, I am 17 years old. All i had to do was sign a paper, that stated that I understood what was happening and about the letter. Three weeks later a civil demand letter came into the mail (03/03/16.) I have a fine of $150, my parents are absolutely disappointed in me and I do not know whether they should pay it or dismiss it. Will it affect me for getting a job in retail? Will it go on my criminal record? I am really scared and I do not know what to do about it.
Answer
Throw the letter away. The civil demand letter has nothing to do with the criminal charge. If you get a notice from a court or police department, however, contact a local attorney IMMEDIATELY. You MAY be sent a citation in the mail. Until then, go and sin no more.
