I was under investigation for child pornography by Homeland Security. I was detained for 8 hours, and my computer was collected. After I was released, my computer was given back to me and I was told that nothing was found.

No charges were filed. There was no indictment. This happened 10 months ago. I did get a lawyer and since then but, I have not heard anything from Homeland. I don’t know if I’m still under investigation. Only time will tell. I think the statute of limitations is 5 years.

But I’m having trouble finding a job.

Will this prior, or possible ongoing investigation, show up on any criminal background check? Especially since I’m trying to be a high school teacher? Will a private investigator be able to tell me?

If no case has been filed, nothing should show on a criminal background check. You do not have a “prior”, at least not from the information described: prior means previous criminal conviction. You can hire a private investigator to perform a background check if you like, but your employment issues may arise from another source.
