Asked 6/17/2016- Corpus Christi, TX

I got a phone call yesterday. It was a recording did not even use my name just a bunch of long numbers. So I spoke to someone they said I owed money on a loan and that it was federal because it had to do with banking but I would be served to go to civil court if I don’t pay. That they had my address and they tried to serve me even gave me a day and time. I was home nobody came. Got another call today and the guy said he could not find my name at all. Then later when I got the chance to speak to the guy I spoke to yesterday. He told me around the same time tomorrow I would be served with a warrant. I would have to pay the full amount plus bond to get out of jail. They also said this was from a loan from 2011.

Answer

A civil suit and a warrant are 2 separate things. Only a law enforcement official can speak authoritatively about a warrant. You can contact the warrant division of the local sheriff’s department to see if you have a warrant, but you are probably just being harassed by a debt collector. You will still need to talk with a local attorney, however, about the civil suit.
