Asked 5/16/2016 – Dallas, TX

If my friend got pulled over and got 4 tickets in my car but the license plate is under my dad’s name and mine since he is my cosigner.
Will this affect my dad in any way?

Answer

Virtually all police cars are equipped with laptop computers. While on patrol, it is common practice for officers to input the license plate numbers of vehicles; if a warrant is outstanding for a person who was driving the car in question, it will appear on the computer as a “regional hit”. This gives the officer reason to stop the car and detain the driver to see if he/she is the person with the outstanding warrant. You father will not be arrested if the warrants are not in his name, but he is subject to repeated stops by the police until the warrants are cleared. Have your friend contact a local attorney to clear the warrants.
