Asked 4/5/2016 – Livingston, TX

Hello, I have a friend in the TDCJ system and he was kept in Ad Seg for 19 yrs. TDCJ boasts about using Ad Seg sparingly. ha! My friend has no incident reports then or now (he interviewed w/ the Assistant Warden and that man changed my friend’s life, thank you Jesus. He’s in the least confined situation now, perfect behavior record, they put him through every class imaginable including programs for early release (helping him to adjust to his new ‘freedom’ and zero restrictions to include a ‘cubby’ vs a cell.

Answer

Being kept in Ad Seg does not, in my opinion, constitute a violation of an inmate’s civil rights. His parole status is determined by the parole board, and is dependent on the sentence and the type of offense. I’m glad he has turned his life around, but I’m not sure these charges affect his legal status.
